Q’s from the Pews: How do I actively participate in Mass? April 26, 2026
The Second Vatican Council’s Sacrosanctum Concilium called all the faithful to active participation in the liturgy. The Mass is not a performance to watch, but a sacred act of worship offered by the whole Body of Christ in union with its Head—Jesus. We participate by singing, praying, kneeling, standing, and responding together. These shared actions express our unity and devotion, fulfilling the Church’s vision that the liturgy be “a public act of worship.”
Lay participation extends to the altar as well. Lectors, Cantors, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion represent the congregation and assist in roles once reserved for the ordained. A particularly meaningful ministry is that of the altar server. Servers carry the Cross in procession, hold candles for the Gospel, present the prayer book to the priest, and assist at the altar during the consecration. Each action adds dignity and reverence to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Anyone who has received their First Holy Communion is eligible to be an Altar Server. It’s a wonderful way to draw closer to Jesus and take part more deeply in the mystery of the Mass. If you, your child or grandchild is interested in becoming an altar server, please contact Deacon Tom or Jim Gregory.
