Society of the Compassionist
The Society of the Compassionist is an ecumenical collection of volunteers who visit the chronically ill and dying to provide support, to receive and partner in the suffering and loneliness that can be difficult to bear.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11: 28-30
Bring the love of God and His healing power to those who may be suffering in nursing homes. What is required as a loving, joyful, compassionate heart, and your desire to sacrifice your time and energy to ease their suffering. There will be no expectation as to your time commitment. No deep knowledge or understanding of the theology is required. You can visit with a nursing home resident as the Holy Spirit moves you. You were anointed at baptism to share in the priestly mission of Jesus. Your compassionate suffering, as an imitation of Christ, and as his body, will be joined to his cross. Through your prayer, this spiritual sacrifice will be offered to God, the father. Through his grace and divine mercy, their suffering will be comforted according to his plan.
