Q’s from the Pews: Why So Many Readings at the Easter Vigil? April 19, 2026
The Easter Vigil includes seven scripture readings during the Liturgy of the Word, each rich in meaning. There is a very special significance to both this number and the choice of these readings. The Vigil Mass is an ancient tradition of the Church retelling salvation history from creation to resurrection. symbolizing the waiting of creation for redemption by God after the Fall.
The Vigil begins in darkness, echoing creation’s beginning. The Paschal candle enters, symbolizing Christ, and God says, “Let there be light” (1st reading). . Humanity’s fall from the Light follows, and the question arises: how will God redeem us?
Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac foreshadows Christ’s passion (2nd reading). Baptism, the essential first step in our return to God, is prefigured by the crossing of the Red Sea (3rd reading). God then promises a new covenant (4th reading), calling all back to Him, and placing His Spirit within us (5th and 6th readings).
Finally, the seventh reading reminds us: just as there are seven days of creation, there are seven acts of salvation, culminating in the Resurrection—God’s new creation through Christ. Though lengthy, these readings reflect the depth of God’s mercy and patience.
