Q’s from the Pews, Vol 8/9: Documents of Vatican II: September 28, 2025

What is our missionary task in the world?

The Second Vatican Council’s decree Ad Gentes (“To the Nations”) reminds us that the entire Church is called to “spread everywhere the reign of Christ” by proclaiming the Gospel. This mission is not only for priests and religious—it belongs to all of us. The Council urges: “Let the clergy highly esteem the apostolate of the laity and help them understand their responsibilities.”

Because the missionary task is immense, the laity play a vital role. We are called to share Christ in our homes, workplaces, and communities—by our words and by the witness of our lives. When the Holy Spirit opens hearts, we should be ready to “proclaim the mystery of Christ” with love and clarity.

Ad Gentes also reminds us that evangelization must respect freedom: the Church forbids forcing anyone to embrace the faith and warns against creating obstacles through false requirements. As St. Paul says: “Do not put a stumbling block in your brother’s way” (Rom 14:13).

The heart of Ad Gentes is this: every Christian is a missionary. Some practical ways you can live as a missionary are: by living your faith visibly—through kindness, honesty, and integrity; by inviting others to Mass, parish events, or small groups; by being ready to explain your faith simply and joyfully when asked, and by supporting missionaries through prayer, donations, or volunteering. Let us always be ready to “give an answer for the hope that is in us—with gentleness and reverence” (1 Pet 3:15).
